Key Words: Blur, Monochrome, City, Urban, Individual
Edward Burtynsky
Edward Burtynsky's photo's are very busy and industrial, yet they show order on a large scale. They show a contrast between an individual.

Ursus Wehrli
Ursus Wehrli is a comedian and artist. His photography is based around the idea of 'cleaning up', and, in a way, are similar to Todd Mclellen's work. This means he will get objects, set them up in a way that is untidy, or disorganised, and he will deconstruct the photo, and make it neaten it; this means by putting individual parts into rows, or colour code the objects.
Key Words: Disorganisation/Organisation, Re-Assemble,
The first pair of photos are of a car park (made with toy cars), with the cars in no particular formation, which is then contrasted by the same photo being re-created, however this time, the cars are categorised in colour-coded groups.

This pair shows a messy plate of food in no sequence, and the same plate with the same food, but this time the food is in rows. The photo is taken face down.

The final pair of photos display a branch with leaves, on the left, however on the right it has been deconstructed and arranged with more uniformity; the leaves are

Object GIFs
Next I created Gifs of objects. These represented order.
Romain Laurent
Key Words:
Surreal Banana Levitation This photo shows a man who seems to be frozen, underneath a rotating banana. This could represent the idea of imagination, as the mans eyes are closed.
|
Key words:
Gravity Head Isolation This GIF features a man in the middle of jumping off the side of a wall, however only the man's head is moving.
|
Key Word:
Focus Isolation This image displays a man who is frozen from the waist up. The man is standing at a street corner and looking up.
|
Romain Laurent is a photographer and Gif artist. Most of his work is based around people and the laws of physics. This is shown by the first photo, where a man is pictured beneath a 'flying' banana peal. Laurent's images are mostly frozen, with only a certain part of the photo in motion.
Symmetrical Order
Mirroring or flipping images, to create symmetry creates an effect which is visually simple interesting, and abstract. Some are more abstract, than others.
1st Response
For my first response, I took photos around the school
2nd Response
For my second response, I thought I would look at building exteriors and outside alleys. The first photo, I mirrored twice- Once horizontally, and once vertically, which made the photo look almost illusion-like, with it's different angles and points of light. The second picture l mirrored horizontally mirrored, creating the effect of levitation. The second pair are more realistic-looking, however they still have a surreal look to them.
How to Mirror:
To create the mirrored effect first select the photo you want, then using the Rectangular Marquee Tool, select the half of the photo you want to mirror. Next, right click, and click on "Layer by Copy" then press cmd + T, then drag the end of the selected half of the image, and then drag it over the other side. and press enter.

Homework title: Portrait disorder/Architectural symmetry
Teacher comment:
Portrait disorder: Well done a strong second response to improve them further you experiment creating a close up portrait using long exposure shots to create a blurred portrait.
Architectural symmetry: The work you have produced is excellent but please can you upload your contact sheets and the original edits
Student comment: WWW- Successfully mirrored photos, Good locations.
EBI- More photos, more variety; too many buildings,

Cut ups
For this task we had to rip up an article into small scraps and pic a random piece, and a word on that piece would decide our key word, which we would then interpret for our photos.
In my first response I got the word 'Opportunity'. I then thought it would be a good idea to look around the music rooms in school, as for me music and school represent a great opportunity to learn and achieve. I used different points of view to show variety, for example
In my second response I flicked through a book onto a random page and landed upon the word Distress. I immediately thought of damaged, or well used things, and after looking around my house I found small areas where walls or tables have been well-used.
2nd Response-
'Distress'

Shasha Levin
Here is a look at some of Sasha Levin's photos:
In this photo Sasha Levin plays around with the lighting to create a more dynamic picture; it seems as if the further up you go up the stairs, the lighter it gets. The silhouette of person adds scale to the photo. The photo is taken from a worms-eye view.
|
This is a simple photo which shows three escalators, the one in the middle has a person on it. The photo appears to have great symmetry and bright, clear light. The photo is taken from a mid view, opposite the escalator.
|
This photo shows a window with another picture of a pair of streets faded over the top. This shows tat there is a vast, growing city world, just outside our windows.

3 Strand ideas
Strand 1: Distressed Buildings
Abandoned derelict buildings have always interested me, the idea that buildings that once had a purpose, are now neglected and left to decay, which can be eerie.
Strand 2: Nature Mirrored Images- Represends Order-
For strand 2 I decided that I would take photos of natural structures, and plants, and mirror them to give them a slightly surreal feel.
Strand 3: City Movement
GIFs of Moving City; Cars driving, people moving. Can be Blurred or not blurred for different effect. At night the lights can make certain movements stand out.
For the first Gif, I stood at the top of a bridge. I thought the lights from the cars, along with the perspective of the long road creates was an interesting idea for a Gif, as in the distance only the lights can be seen, however the closer the cars get, the more distinctive they become.
The second Gif was taken from a video I took, at the front of a bus. I then took frames from the video and created the Gif from the frames.
To improve both Gifs, I should use a steadier camera, this can be achieved by using a tripod. I should also take more frames and slower the frame rate, so that the separate frames can be seen easier, and the movement can be seen clearer. For further development, I should play around with colours and blurred effects to add more interest to the photos.

Development idea - City Movement
Development- Overlaying Gif frames
Development- Hue/Saturation
To create an interesting effect to the gifs I changed the hue and saturation of each frame to make the colours different. To do this, I selected each frame and changed the hue to -90, when making the gif. This can create a different feel to the image, or make it look more surreal.
London Gifs
Cocu Liu
Although Cocu Liu doesn't have a photography background, he loves to take photos on his iPhone and share them on Instagram. He often uses silhouetted people as the focus for his city-based photos. His photos are also often monochrome which creates a clean effect, making the photos more visually appealing.
