Past, Present & Future - Mind Map!
Dear Photograph by Taylor Jones
'Dear photograph' is a blog set up by Taylor jones, after he went through an old photo album. Originally he posted just the one photo, however once his photo became popular, it became the focus of his blog. The images have been taken by placing older photographs of the same place. This creates an interesting effect as it shows change and/or similarity.

This photo shows a large building, with the old photo held on front of the door. The old image shows 3 men on front of the same door the men are standing on the top step and are dressed formally suggesting that the photo was taken at a formal or special occasion. This adds to the nostalgic feel to the photo. The old photo is being held off centre, showing off more of the building in the new photo. The old photo is black and white, which contrasts.

This photo shows a man and a woman sitting on a bench, in a garden, and Taylor has lined the old photo up with the same garden. The photo evokes a sense of nostalgia, as the old photo, which looks like it has been taken on a normal, sunny day, has been given new life through Taylor Jones' photo.
|
In this photo there is door with a small child by the window on the old photo. The child has their hand placed on the window, The old photo has a slight sepia tone to it, suggesting that it is perhaps quite old, possibly meaning that the child has now grown up. This adds to the sentimentality of the photo.

My First Response
For my first response I found old photos of Crouch End, and found the location of where the photo was taken, and held the image up, over the area, like how Taylor Jones took his images. My aim for these photos were to create a similar effect to Taylor Jones, but with more of historical feel to them, as rather than taking photos of people and family occasions, I decided to take photos of the Crouch End Town Landscape, from the past, and now.
I think I was successful because I managed to capture the same idea as Taylor Jones', while also developing his idea.

Aged Portraits
In order to create an ages look, I took the original portrait, and merged it with a photo of an older woman on photoshop.
Overall, I feel that my attempt at creating a aged portrait was successful, however I think that the final product could have been a little cleaner, especially around the mouth, as this would have made the photo more realistic, but all in all, I feel that the effect worked well.

How to make aged portaits:
4) Select the other layer, then adjust the photo so that lines up with the guides.
5) Make the top layer transparent so that both images can be seen. Change the transparency to suit what you are most happy with.
Bobby Neel Adams
Bobby Neel Adams uses two portraits of the same person when they were older and younger, and puts them side-by-side. The subject of the photos copy a similar expression to show the change of age, and make the faces proportional to create one face.
My response:
I think that my response could have been better because the rip effect is not bold enough, however overall I think I achieved the style of Bobby Need Adam's photos.
Irina Werning
Irina Werning's 'Back to the Future' project is a collection of old photos, which have been recreated and the two photos have been put next to each other. The photos give a fascinating look at how people change and age.
In this photo a girl is stood off centre next to a large pillar, and the camera is looking down on the subject.
|
In both photos the subject is looking away from the centre. Both the old and new photo are in black and white. Both photos have been taken from a high angle, looking down at the subject.
|
In this photo the subject is posing and re-posing for what seems to be a school photo, which has been taken from a mid-view.

Tate Exhibition: Performing for the Camera
Performing for the Camera is an exhibition at the Modern Tate which shows a range of type of performance captured, or documented by the camera. The exhibition explores the different definitions of what performing in front of the camera is throughout time. For example theatrical photos taken which are documenting performances and actors in victorian stage, along with the idea of photos being taken of people posing in front of a camera, in order to take 'selfies' in 2015.
The exhibition features photos which evoke an array of emotions, such as the more light-hearted comical photos taken by Martin Parr, to the chilling, and intriguing work of Francesca Woodman.

Tate Walk
After looking around the exhibition we took a walk around the South Bank, looking out for photos that could show past, present and/or future.
3 Strands
First Strand:
Landscape Rip Effect
For my first strand I decided to look back at Bobby Neel Adams (More about him above) as my inspiration. This time around, I decided to use the inside of my house, instead of using people in order to develop his style of past and present photography.
I feel that my photos were a success because because I managed to blend the two photos- old and new, into one, as well as having the 'rip' between the old and new photos.

Yowayowa
For my second strand I decided to take inspiration from Yowayowa, whose photos give the illusion that she levitating. She creates her photos by using a fast shutter-speed and jumping in midair while the photo is being taken. I took inspiration from Yowayowa's work, however I decided that I would have the people who would be levitating in the middle of a movie-style fight scene.
I feel that my photos worked well at capturing the motion of an over-the-top fight

Household Object Transformation
Household Object Transformation
Inspiration:
Domenic Bahmann
Domenic Bahmann
I was drawn to Domenic Bahmann's photos because they are clear, and simple. They show old objects being given a new meaning, thought being cut up, positioned and by having things added to them, such as eyes, or a chair. The plain backdrops make the object's meaning easier to understand. I chose him as an artist.
My photos
Taking inspiration from Domenic Bahmann's photos, I found some old objects from my house and changed their meaning; for example- A yoyo, a lighthouse souvenir or a pair of gloves. I decided to use a plain background for simplicity, like Domenic Bahmann. The clear backgrounds make the objects stand out more.
My intension with these images was to convey a sense of fun, in the idea of an object's old purpose to be change. I think that I was successful in my photos as I managed to give the household objects a new meaning and make them visually simple and effective, so that it is clear what is object was, and that it has been changed or personified.

Final Piece- Abstract Object Transformation
For my final piece, I decided that I would do something more abstract with objects. With a little bit of research I decided to crate patterns from a bunch of old objects.
