Inspiring force photographers:
Richard long
Richard long is a well established Photographer, sculptor and painter. His photos show an interesting view on the natural world as he displays both amazing natural structures and man-man formations of stones. This blend makes for an incredible and simple photo representing force. I like his photos because they aren't overwhelming, yet still manage to amaze.
The first images has displays an imposting mountain. The contrast of the natural structure of the mountain with the man-made placement of the rocks on front is particularly interesting. The second image is the most simple of the three, showing a man-made rock formation, simply consisting of pebbles in several circle, on a fairly blank surface. This creates a nice, simple visual, which is pleasing to the eye. The photo has been taken looking down at the circles. The third picture features a rocky surface with bigger, lighter rocks places in a row getting further away from the camera, into a smokey background. The larger rocks in the row add perspective, which shows the distance of the shot, and leads the viewer's eyes to the smoke, or fog which consumes nearly a third of the frame, evoking a sense of mystery. |
Guy Tal
Guy Tal is an author, photographer, and public speaker. He believes that art and practicing being creative, has the ability to "Transform and Enrich life". His photos are stunning and a visual treat, all are serenely natuaral and display the very best of the the natural world. The contrast of bright flowers emerging from cold blue rocks is an amazing, could-be-poetic way of showing contrast in nature. Most of his photos are taken in Utah and display the breathtaking landscape.
The first of the 3 pictures, I have chosen to look at features a birds-eye view of a cold purple cracked ground, with dark purple and green flowers emerging through the cracks. This could represent the idea of the constant rebirth of nature. The second displays a smooth, orange rock-face for about two thirds of the photo, with a dark cloudy sky making up the rest of the photo. one thing which is effective about the photo is the solitary tree, which is slightly off centre. The tree not only help show the scale of the cliffs, but it's leaves add a green colour to the predominantly orange and blue-grey colour scheme. The third photo is of various waterfalls, sliding over the smooth rock face. The thing that makes this photo visually interesting is the oranges and greens seen in the rocks, which mixed with the clear water, gives the rocks a clean, shiny look. |
Andrew Whyte
Andrew Whyte is most famous for his Long Exposure and 'Legography' projects; both of which show off the world from an interesting viewpoint. Both projects look up at the world, showing it off as a fantastic place of amazing sights. His long exposure project shows off the night sky and other subjects in a new light (No pun intended), whilst the Lego project follows a Lego minifigure of himself, across a large variety of locations and situations, these include a train station, the beach, the london eye, and more. I like his photos because they are quite powerful at showing off how different the world can be, from place to place, and how it can be view differently depending on the person. I especially like his 'Legography' project as it shows the world in an imposing, larger-than-life way, in a way that is modern and fresh to whoever views the series of photos.

Order and Disorder- man vs nature
Nadav Kander
Half life/Chernobyl:
Nadav Kander's Half Life project consists of photos taken 20 years after the Chernobyl disaster. His photos show the constant battle between man, and built structures vs. Nature and natural formations. The pictures show the constant circle of how humans build upon nature, but eventually destroy what they create leaving the land back to natures course.
"Home to more than 40,000 people, the apartments, schools and hospitals that were hastily left following the controversial evacuation are stark reminders of past lives, leaving a disturbing sense of quite. An uneasiness that I had never previously experienced." —Nadav Kander.

Man vs nature- fortismere pool
First response
For a good example of man-vs-nature we visited the old, now unused school swimming pool, which has been out of bounds for over 10 years. The pool shows how when left alone, nature always finds a way to grow back, despite being built upon by man. This shows that the Earth always has a way to strive despite The pool itself was filled 'relics', items which once would have been used by people, are taken by the pool, which again shows nature putting a stop to man's actions.
Physical force
François Delfosse creates his stunning 'glacier' photos from a crumpled plastic bag. I was inspired by his photos because they show that even something small like a plastic bag, can look colossal, and empowering from a different perspective.

Physical force second Response
For my second response, I decided to show physical force through the idea of stretching, pulling and bending.

3-D photoshop images
First select the photo you want to make 3D, then select the area of the photo that you want 3D, using the wand tool. Next right click, create a layer via cut and duplicate the new layer, name one 'red', and one 'blue'. Then double-click the layer and for red, unselect G and B, leaving it red. For the other only unselect R, leaving it Cyan blue. Then drag the layers slightly away from each other.
My Response
1st Response: Around the school
To make photos look imposing I used extreme angles.
2nd Response: Structures at the fair
Carter's Steam Fair is well known for it's classic-looking, steam-powered, restored-vintage rides, making it a place which can be enjoyed by young and old. It's a good place to go to represent imposing architectural structures as, the larger rides, even when not in motion, can seem overwhelming due to the hight and scale of the structures. The fair can often present a variety of emotions; Joy, Fear, Nostalgia. I represented all of these emotions into different pictures, some being silhouetted and imposing in a threatening way, whist other are brighter and more inviting, and are imposing in a more colourful light.

Stratford/Olympic Park
Stratford/Olympic Park
For my third response, I decided to take photos around the olympic park and stratford areas. More specifically I took photos of Westfield shopping centre, Olympic Park and the Orbit, which are all very good places to show of how man-made structures can be imposing, and structurally interesting.
Final Piece- 6 Photos:
For my Final Exhibition piece I decided to pick 6 of my best photos from the unit. These consisted of 3 Physical Force photos and 3 Imposing Architecture photos. I feel that these photos collectively convey a good range of the forces unit, as well as showing that forces can be abstract, or contain a clear structure.
